Hung Hing Ying and Leung Hau Ling Charitable Foundation

The Hung family has been a staunch supporter of education. They set up the "Hung Hing Ying and Leung Hau Ling Charitable Foundation" in 1994 as a non-profit private funding body in Hong Kong in support of educational and cultural advancement in Greater China.

In 1986, the Hung Hing Ying Building on HKU's Main Campus was so named in recognition of the Hung family's generous support of physical sciences research and postgraduate scholarships at the University. In 1995, the building was declared a historical monument.

In 2008, the Hung family further donated a sum of HK$15 million which was matched dollar for dollar by the University to form a perpetual endowment. The fund will be used to support appointments of visiting distinguished scholars humanities. The Hung Leung Hau Ling Distinguished Fellow in Humanities scheme was established in Madame Hung's name, as a gift from the Hung family to celebrate her eightieth birthday.

Mrs Hung Leung Hau-ling is the wife of the late Mr Hung Hing-ying. She was born in 1928 and received her nursing education in Guangzhou, and became a practicing nurse after marriage. In the 1970s, she and her husband began their illustrious careers in the field of financial investment. Their company had unswerving development even in the midst of several financial turmoils. Mrs Hung formally retired in 2007 and now enjoys the company of her children and grandchildren.

Mr Hung Hing-ying was born in Nanhai, Guangdong. He was endowed with great intelligence and an industrious approach to life, and thus reaped rewarding profits. Being deprived of learning opportunities, he held great respect for scholars and was most supportive of sponsoring the schooling of poor but outstanding students.
